Clear Finishes

The use of some household cleaners, abrasives, soaps and wood conditioners may contribute to discolouration and premature deterioration of clear finishes. Most applied finishes will fade over time and with exposure to sunlight. Areas exposed to intense direct sunlight will be affected more than finishes in shaded areas.

The durability of a clear finishes on wood depends on the wood substrate and the moisture balance in the wood. Humidity levels that are too low or too high, or that fluctuate often, can cause a fine network of cracks called “checks” or wider cracks in clear finishes as the wood expands and contracts.
